Wanted List

I used to post a brief list of sneakers I was still looking for in this section, but I've since given up on them. While I haven't given up on sneakers entirely, I no longer purchase any products derived from animals. If you want to know why, click here or, better yet, read The Food Revolution or Thanking the Monkey - both are highly accessible and neither one is preachy.

It's just sometimes I read your stuff and I think to myself while I'm reading "This cat has a lot of the same priorities and mentality as I do".

Though I will admit, my mind is what people would label as "a damn mess"...One day I want to read on important historical events, the next all I might wanna do is watch Marvel Super Hero Squad and eat cereal.

But yeah...again, good to see people with their head on straight and not obnoxious about it. I think that's why I got respect for the stuff you say.

And I know what you mean about the 160 character limit on Twitter, but if you do start one some day (or a blog),please let me know. I just added the NT one.

There's a lot of randomness and clutter but sometimes I do find a person that uses it to help benefit others, like you were saying...like recommending some books, short stories, little messages and videos that I guess help make the day a little better and open up our mind to what's out there.

Thanks for taking your time to respond by the way, it's very appreciated.

Oh man. Almost forgot....I did a lot of advertising art and graphic design in High School. Got a few awards for it too. And I did a little fashion designing when I had extra time at the Tech school I was at when I used to get bored.

If you guys ever need any help making like some tees or anything. I'd love to help out.

Really though my dude. You are an inspiration...I wish you did like a Twitter Rev Run Wisdom thing.

I don't find too many people like you. I'd love to be grown up, mature, understanding, and humane as you but the life I went through was so hectic that it's hard enough to stay sane and proper as I am today.

I mean I stayed out of trouble as best as I could. I love animals and like that's why I became vegetarian. I love women, that's why I don't dog them like other dudes from my hood did. And other stuff...I try my best not to be a SOB. I dunno man...sorry for rant. But it's lovely to see people like out there in the world.

I have a homegirl that she's kinda like you...like what I said in the 2nd paragraph there. Just makes me thankful for people like that.

Ummmm...sorry again for all this blah blah rant...I drink a lot...just...uh...sayin (2pac) you are appreciated (2pac)

    Reply from Method Man:

That's very generous of you. Honestly, I don't think I'd be all that compatible with Twitter's 160 character limit. We do have a staff twitter account for NikeTalk news: http://www.twitter.com/NikeTalk1999

I think most of us can identify with the struggles you alluded to, which is why we need to help each other carry the burden and, to invoke the NACW's slogan, lift one another as we climb.

Dr. King often quoted the following lyrics sung most famously by Mahalia Jackson,

"If I can help somebody as I pass along,
If I can cheer somebody with a word or song,
If I can show somebody they're traveling wrong,
Then my living shall not be in vain."

Although I don't collect sneakers or purchase animal products anymore, I'm still proud to be a part of the community. This is where I come from: I am basketball, I am hip hop. I refuse to turn my back on that, and on NikeTalk, because it's still a place where I can connect with like-minded people from all over the world. Gandhi exhorted us to be the change we wish to see in this world, and we're most effective when we can bring that change to our own communities. The positive example you can set by respecting women, by demonstrating compassion and a concern for your health along with the health of others through veg*anism is a boon to your entire community.

When we were sick as children, those who cared for us didn't offer us chicken soup because they wanted to teach us to support cruelty. They wanted to be kind. When I latched on to Air Jordans, it wasn't wearing another creature's flesh that so captured my imagination. When I first listened to hip hop, it wasn't because I wanted to celebrate stick up kids. Culture is living and it's up to all of us to move it forward, to find new and more just forms and expressions for the underlying sentiments that drive us to be like Mike, grip a mic like Rakim, or offer comfort foods to someone we care about. NikeTalk, to me, is about sharing with and learning from others and working together to help our culture evolve into more just and equitable form that better expresses who we truly as as people - and that helps us better prepare ourselves and our young to become the people we all aspire toward.

I hope you'll continue to provide an inspiration to those in your communities, both online and off. Our future depends on it.

    Peace.

I saw the posts in question and honestly they left the staff no choice but to impose a permanent ban. They were simply flagrant and everyone I'm aware of who's posted anything similar has been banned as well. We'd love for the rules to be upheld perfectly, but ultimately any time you violate them you risk your membership and that's what happened here. I'm glad you understand the policy and I'm sure I'll see you around the board again after you've served your time. Peace.

I know I'm banned and all.. I take responsibility for that... but When can I come back to the general population Meth? *ducks for cover*

    11/08/09

    Reply from Method Man:

Unfortunately, it seems you went way over the line and managed to pick up a permanent ban, so there's no way you can sit out for anything less than the maximum suspension of 1 month - and then you'd have to create a new account. The good news is that if you can go 12 months without picking up a single warning, I can reinstate your original account. Sound fair?

    Peace.

I'm considering becoming vegetarian after reading some of the posts and opening my eyes to what happens with regards to some food. I was just wondering what your typical diet consists of? It will be hard trying to do this but i'm willing to try. Thanks.

    11/06/09

    Reply from Method Man:

I think it's wonderful that you're interested in eliminating meat from your diet. Meat has always struck me as unethical, but more and more research has revealed that meat isn't just murder - it's suicide. Plant based diets reduce all sorts of health risks, from heart disease to cancer. It's just unfortunate that even those of us who abstain from and oppose meat still bear the epidemiological risks associated with factory farming - like swine flu.

As a vegan, I don't purchase or consume any animal products. So, unlike most vegetarians, I don't consume eggs or dairy products, wear leather/wool/etc. It's challenging, but as a result you learn exactly what goes into your body and into the products you use every day. Most people don't realize that even the average toothpaste and deodorant contains animal-derived ingredients, for example.I'm always looking to optimize my diet and there's really no "one size fits all" solution. I work with my trainers to select supplements and plan my diet to suit my performance needs and I would suggest consulting a professional before making any dramatic changes. Going vegan can be one of the best health decisions a person can make - but only if the diet is properly planned. As a general principle, you'll want to adjust your inputs for your body size and activity level. You wouldn't expect a 6'6", 220 pound professional athlete to share the same diet as a 5'9", 125 pound college student, after all. Though consulting with a nutritionist or trainer is ideal, you can get a pretty good idea of a healthy caloric intake by using the calculator available here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/calorie-calculator/NU00598

As far as your daily protein intake is concerned, there are differing opinions out there and I think it really comes down to your fitness goals. Many people feel that protein is overrated, and if you're just looking to maintain your current mass or lose weight I'd be inclined to agree. If you're a serious athlete looking to add lean mass as part of a strength training program, though, I think 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight is still a good rule of thumb, and it's certainly attainable through a vegan diet. You may wish to consider flax and hemp seed supplements (which also provide omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids), seitan, lentils, tofu, quinoa, and other sources for protein. People often wonder how to get calcium without milk thanks to dairy industry marketing campaigns. I'd be happy to talk more about the health hazards and ethical issues related to dairy products - but as far as diet is concerned, just know that you can get more calcium from collard greens than you can from cow's milk, and it's far healthier for you. Designing a new diet may seem complicated. Fortunately, there are a ton of resources out there and I'd be happy to share some that have helped me improve my diet as a vegan athlete.

You'll find plenty of vegan recipes online and some websites offer sample meal plans to get you started, like this one: http://living-vegan.blogspot.com/2007/02/vegan-sample-meal-plans.html You'll also want to be certain you avoid the pitfalls of poorly planned vegan diets: http://www.vegsoc.org/info/vegan-nutrition.html

I hope that helps and I wish you all the best in your transition! If you do decide to follow through, please let me know how it goes!

    Peace.

Can I ask why I was banned? As far as I know, I have done nothing to warrant such an action. Thanks.

    10/07/09

    Reply from Method Man:

You were banned less than a month ago under the name "Korean Dave." We're not running a revolving door system here. If we ban someone from the board, we're not going to let them walk right back in wearing a fake mustache and pretend they're a completely different person. You'll need to wait at least another month before you're given another opportunity to post to our forums.

    Peace.
